RALEIGH,(North Carolina), July 20:Top seed Andy Roddick struggled to a 7-6 6-7 7-6 win over Dmitry Tursunov as he began his bid for a third straight Indianapolis title on Tuesday.
Roddick, playing his first match since losing to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final, fired 17 aces in the second-round tie which lasted two hours 37 minutes.
But the American world number four was nearly outdone by the free-swinging style of Tursunov, who had 18 aces and 12 double faults.
Roddick, who had a first round bye, served for the match at 5-3 in the third set but wasted his chance with three errors before winning.
Britain’s Greg Rusedski, who won this ATP tournament in 2002, beat South African Wesley Moodie 6-7 7-6 7-6.
Wildcard Andrew Murray, still recovering from his first challenger title victory in California on Sunday, saw off Brazilian Flavio Saretta 6-4 6-2 in the first round.
“I was a bit lethargic today during my match,” the 18-year-old Briton said on the ATP website.
“When we got in yesterday, we had to fly through the night and I didn’t get much sleep.
“I didn’t play my best match today but I came through.
I got some rest and hopefully will be better.”

Schnyder in 2nd round
CINCINNATI,(Ohio): Top seed Patty Schnyder cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over wild card Caroline Wozniacki in the first round of the 170,000 dollars WTA Western and Southern Financial Group Women’s Open on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Swiss improved to 34-13 on the season with the victory over the 15-year-old Wozniacki, who was competing in her first WTA Tour event.
Although she ranks fourth on the junior circuit, Wozniacki is considered the top junior prospect due to her youth.
In other afternoon action, third-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro and No. 4 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia both advanced.
Jankovic rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, triumph over Maria Emilia Salerni of Argentina, while Hantuchova routed American Lilia Osterloh, 6-1, 6-2.
Seventh-seeded American Anna-Lee Groenefeld was the lone seed to lose, falling to Sania Mirza of India, 6-4, 6-3.
In Tuesday’s evening action, No. 2 Vera Zvonareva of Russia will meet American Meghann Shaughnessy, fifth-seeded Marion Bartoli of France faces Bethanie Mattek of the U.S. and No. 6 Ai Sugiyama of Japan will meet American Lindsay Lee-Waters.
American Cory Ann Avants and France’s Camille Pin also play Tuesday night.
In the lone unseeded match during the day, Sybille Bammer of Austria defeated Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic, 7-5, 6-3. Bammer will face Jankovic in the second round.
