Ex-Olympian Ashfaq dies

By Our Sports Reporter

RAWALPINDI, July 3: Muhammad Ashfaq, a member of Pakistan hockey team that won gold at the Mexico Olympics in 1968, died on Sunday. He was 58. The deceased was buried at the Dehri Hasanabad Graveyard in Rawalpindi.

A brilliant forward and schemer, Ashfaq was widely recognised as the finest inside-right in the game. His body dodges and resourcefulness made him a constant threat to opposing defences.

He was the mainstay of the team between 1965 to 1971 and was also a gold-winner at the 1970 Bangkok Asiad and the inaugural World Cup in Barcelona.
