Motion on consulate torching

ISLAMABAD May 13: The combined opposition on Friday submitted an adjournment motion to the Senate Secretariat seeking discussion on the torching of Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad (Afghanistan) on May 11 during a demonstration against the desecration of the Holy Quran in Guantanamo Bay.

The motion, signed by leader of the opposition in the Senate, Mian Raza Rabbani, Prof Khurshid Ahmed, Ishaq Dar, Sardar M. Latif Khosa, Dr Safdar Ali Abbasi, Dr Abdullah Riar and Amanullah Kanrani referred to reports that appeared in Dawn on May 12.

The motion said: “It is published in Daily Dawn dated May 12, 2005 that Pakistan consulate was torched by a mob in Jalalabad and workers of the consulate were forced to take refuge in a nearby house.”

The matter is of serious nature and needs discussion on the floor of the Upper House, the motion concluded.
