PAEC helping industry to tap WTO benefits

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, April 26: Member Physical Sciences, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Dr Masud Ahmad on Tuesday said investing in and promoting quality culture was the only way to survive in the challenging world and PAEC was making best endeavours to support the local industry for competitive capability.

“For tapping the trade opportunities emerging out of the World Trade Order (WTO) regime, each nation has to unlock its own share of exports for which quality is the only key and for this purpose PAEC is evolving technologies to enhance the competitive capability of the local industry,” he said while speaking at the national symposium on “Launching of IAEA Reference Material for Proficiency Test” at the Comsats Headquarters here on Tuesday.

He said, “Quality is a conviction which manifests itself through leadership, people, policies, practices and processes in which everyone involved must be clear of purposes, directions and expectations.”

Being in the nuclear industry, Dr Ahmad said, he was clear that investing in quality paid off and path to quality was the safest and the most economical.

He said PAEC had the privilege of organizing this national moot aimed at establishing credible laboratories across the country to achieve international norms of quality standards to help industry gain world market confidence in WTO regime.

He thanked the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its help in assisting member countries to establish quality system in their laboratories to obtain national and international accreditation.

He told the participants that based upon credible quality management of its laboratories, PINSTECH had been declared Regional Resource Unit of the IAEA and it was also winner of IDB award for excellence in science and technology.

Dr Ahmad said, “After the withdrawal of the support and assistance of industrial world to its nuclear power programme, PAEC focused on development of infrastructure in the areas of design, quality control technology and fabrication.

These arrangements helped sustain our own needs simultaneously being available to the local industry for enhancing its competitive capability, and now support-industry- services are regular part of our forward thrust in nation building,” he said.
