KARACHI, April 26: Another branch of driving licence is being established in Korangi to facilitate area people. Earlier, a driving licence branch was set up in Nazimabad on Sept 20, 2004, to cater the need of the growing demand as the volume of vehicles is increasing each day.
Official sources said that the police had chosen a building in Korangi No 5, which is called Civic Centre Korangi. The building was occupied by Rangers and the dialogue was held between the police and Rangers for the establishment of the driving licence branch there. The new branch is likely to be inaugurated in a fortnight.
Sources said that Rangers were ready to vacate some portion of the building to facilitate the police to open another driving licence branch for the benefit of area people.
“Sindh Home Minister Rauf Siddiqui played a significant role in getting the portion of the building for police to set up the branch,” DIG Traffic Yameen Khan said on Tuesday.
He said that the police had received an amount of Rs25 million from the revenue generated through challans and fines on motorists. The home minister directed to prepare an estimated cost for the computers and other equipment for the branch and use the amount from the funds generated.
He said that it was city government’s building and permission had been obtained to establish the office. As the building was in the use of Rangers, the police had talked to them and they agreed to vacate a portion, as they had vacated one in Nazimabad.
The population of the city had grown to 15 million and there were 1.4 million vehicles in the metropolis. According to statistics, seven vehicles per hour were adding to the existing volume of the vehicles.
Yameen Khan said that the need of driving licence was on the rise with the increase in the number of vehicles and two branches could not handle the whole pressure. He expressed hope that the new branch would share the burden and would be made operational soon.
