KARACHI, April 23: The Islami Jamiat Talaba Karachi on Saturday held a demonstration near the Government Jinnah College, Nazimabad, to press for arresting of the killers of its worker, who was allegedly kidnapped and tortured so badly that he lost his life on April 19.
Speakers and participants of the meeting, which was held at the board office intersection, vowed to continue their campaign till the time the killers were arrested, and until a police official, allegedly patronizing the group of unruly elements of another student wing, was brought to book.
Due to a sit-in and meeting, the vehicular traffic was disturbed for sometime in the area. An IJT leader said workers wanted to hold a ‘Shahadat Conference’ at the Jinnah College to pay tribute to their deceased colleague, Farhan Asif. The IJT workers happened to be students of the same college, but they were not allowed to do so, added the student leader.
Addressing the gathering of emotionally charged activists, the Amir of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Karachi, Merajul Huda, said that academic peace in the city was under severe threat from a student body, which was being patronized by the police at the behest of a political party, which happened to be a partner in the government as well.
He said the police was ‘not ready’ to register cases and enter any FIR in regard to the ghastly incident of Farhan Asif’s murder, while on the other hand, no action had been taken against an SHO alleged of giving shelter to unruly groups. He demanded the SHO be suspended at once and an enquiry be instituted against him.
IJT Nazim Tahir Akbar said his organization was right in holding demonstrations and rallies in the city as their demands had not been met so far. The IJT had warned the government on April 19 that if the killers were not arrested and action not taken against the disputed SHO within 72 hours, the government would be responsible for all extreme actions taken by the IJT.
The police is still not ready to enter an FIR, while the killers of Farhan were also at large, which indicated the fact that lawlessness was at its peak in the city, added Tahir. He said no one could now stop the IJT workers from taking to the streets, particularly in a situation when justice was not being observed in their case.
