GUJRAT, April 21: The Kharian circle police on Thursday raided the outhouse of Kharian Tehsil Nazim Nadeem Asghar Kaira in Lalamusa to arrest him and other accused wanted by Kharian Cantonment police in two separate cases. The Cantonment police had registered a case against PPP tehsil secretary-general Zia Mohyuddin and his brother Raza Mohyuddin on the charge of intake of liquor, interference into police affairs and some other charges some days ago on the complaint of SHO Ghulam Jaffar Cheena.

The police had arrested Zia while his brother Raza escaped from the scene. They took Zia to the area medical officer Dr Naveed Iqbal, who refused to give his medico-legal certificate. However, the department higher-ups transferred Dr Naveed and his wife Dr Tahira the same night.

After registration of the first case, the Cantonment police had registered another case against Tehsil Nazim Nadeem Asghar Kaira, his cousins Naveed Zaman Kaira, Raza Mohyuddin, Ghulam Dastagir and seven unidentified men on the charge of attacking the police station to get released their cousin Zia, injuring SHO Cheena, besides other charges. The area magistrate had sent Zia on judicial remand to jail the next day.

The police had arrested another accused, Ghulam Dastagir, who was also sent to jail by the area magistrate after two-day physical remand. The remaining accused of the two cases were at large since registration of the cases.

The Kharian circle police, led by DSP Imtiaz Bhali, raided the outhouse of Mr Kaira in Lalamusa but none of the suspects was present. The police, however, deployed a constable at the outhouse to keep a constant eye on the movement of people there.

Nadeem Asghar Kaira is the son of the late Haji Asghar Kaira, who was an MNA, and cousin of MNA Qamar Zaman Kaira.

ATTACK ON POLICE STATION: Some PML men on Wednesday attacked the Gujrat Saddar police station and beat up the policemen, including SHO Mian Abbas.

The Saddar police have arrested the three suspects and recovered illicit arms from their possession.

Reports said district council former member Malik Razzaq and his brother Gul Hassan visited the police station and asked the police to release some accused. On refusal, they became infuriated and attacked the policemen. Upon this, the police arrested the two brothers and registered a case against them.

Meanwhile, PML youth wing president Hanif Haideri along with his supporters attacked the police station and beat up the SHO and other policemen in a bid to get the five men released. The police, however, overpowered the attackers and informed the DPO about the matter. The DPO directed the SHO to register a case against the attackers.

However after a while, the Saddar police received another direction from the DPO about the release of Hanif Haideri and his supporters without registration of a case.

Meanwhile, PPP District President Mian Mushtaq Husain Pagganwala has criticized the police for giving least respect to his partymen.

He said at a press conference on Thursday the Cantonment police had registered two fake cases against Kairas of Lalamusa and other party men while Saddar police did not registered any case against PML men

who beat up some of the policemen.

PMA STRIKE: The Pakistan Medical Association’s local chapter on Wednesday observed a complete strike for illegal posting of two of their colleagues Dr Naveed and his wife Dr Tahira.

A delegation of the PMA met District Nazim Chaudhry Shafaat Hussain and informed him about the matter on Thursday. They alleged that the higher-ups had transferred the couple when Dr Naveed refused to issue a fake medico-legal certificate about the intake of liquor by Zia Mohyuddin.

The Nazim assured the visiting delegation that he would personally look into the matter. He had also directed the DPO Raja Munawar Hussain to conduct an inquiry into attack on the Gujrat Saddar police station.
