FAISALABAD, April 19: The federal government has approved Rs994 million for improving water supply and sewerage system of the city. Wasa sources told this correspondent on Tuesday the agency had been facing problems in provision of water supply and drainage facilities for want of funds. The sources said funds would be released during 2005-06.

The Wasa has 1,200km long sewer lines in the city, pumps out 400 cusec sewerage water and provides 50m gallon water to citizens daily. The agency pays Rs18 million annually as electricity bills.

The Wasa with the help of the government of Japan has launched a project to the tune of Rs2,500 million (Rs2.5 billion) for providing 20 million gallon more water per day to citizens.

The Wasa authorities claimed that civic amenities would improve after the completion of the Rs994m sewerage programme and Japan-funded water supply project.
