Super Conqueror should land PIA Cup

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, April 15: The Canon Fall-Dandy Lion half bred bay colt Super Conqueror, should gallop away with the PIA Boeing 777 Challenge Cup to be contested by three colts and two fillies over the sprinting distance of six furlongs, when the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting gets underway at the Karachi Racecourse on Saturday afternoon.

A week ago the colt scorched the turf over six furlongs in a smart time of one minute 15 1/5 seconds, beating Fantasia by four lengths which should place him ahead of the bay filly Makina.

The last time the two met, Makina beat Super Conqueror by half a length to lift the Sindh Breeders Cup, clicking one minute 15 2/5 seconds over the six furlong journey.

However if all goes well, Super Conqueror is our fancy to make it two winners in a row for owner Rehaab Ateeq, with Harry Potter and Tharkyee completing the frame.

All in all, eight events have been chalked out for the afternoon’s programme. The first four will be run over the sprinting distance of five furlongs and the next four over six.

The first race begins at 1-30 p.m.

In the opener, Sardar Abdul Aziz’s chestnut horse Welcome Pachino, a comfortable winner last Sunday under jockey Tariq Baran, should do the trick once again, sprinting past the winning post ahead of Sea Biscuit ad Cool Water.

In the next race with 18 runners vying for the top honours, the bay horse On The Run, should get the better of Ladla and top weight Tag Team.

The bay colt Leopard looks a good thing in the third event and should be followed home Silent Love and Neelam Taab, in another large field consisting of 18 runners. But if the three-year-old bay colt Pied Piper is on th job, he should win this race hands down.

Issey Miyke after a few close misses, should pick up the spoils in the fourth race, with Snake River and Al Zarrar battling it out for the second spot.

In the sixth event going over six furlongs, the bay horse Safeena-e-Arab should complete a hat trick of victories for owner Syed Nadeem Anwar and will be challenged by stable companion Bahar-e-Arab and the bay mare Sonia.

If the thoroughbred bay colt Ceanu Reeves, a four-year-old bay colt from Lahore is ticking, Syed Nadeem Anwar should be provided with another winner, with Aie Bahar, Jingu and Sarazen engaged in a keen duel for the second and third positions.

In the concluding event, Murtaza Hussain’s thoroughbred chestnut filly Fantasia with a good lad astride, should sprint past the winning post ahead of Sharp Cat, Penny and Killer Instincts. However if the bay horse Wonder Thunder is on the job, he could squeeze in for a place chance

All said and done an exciting afternoon of horse racing should await the fans come Saturday afternoon.
