Aizaz and Asif bowl PIA to thrilling win: Patron’s Cup
KARACHI, April 6: Aizaz Cheema and Asif Mujtaba shared seven wickets between them on Wednesday as PIA clawed back to beat PTCL by 15 runs in a thrilling Patron’s Cup Pool ‘A’ one-day match at the UBL Sports Complex.
Chasing 277, PTCL were bowled out for 261 in the 49th over after heading for a certain victory. The result ensured PIA’s unbeaten run with three straight wins.
Medium-pacer Aizaz took four wickets for 41 runs while Asif’s slow left-armers accounted for three vital scalps to trigger a startling collapse during which PTCL lost eight batsmen for the addition of 77 runs.
At halfway stage of the PTCL innings, there was going to be one winner and that was not PIA.
Left-hander Babar Naeem and Irfan Haider had Moin Khan’s men on the run in the course of a splendid opening partnership of 131.
But once Asif brought an end to Babar’s 55-ball knock of 69 (including 11 boundaries), PIA penetrated through the rest of PTCL batting. In the very next over, Aizaz, getting the ball to reverse swing, found Irfan trapped in front of the stumps.
Even after Irfan, who hit eight fours in his 67-ball 56, departed, PTCL were still in the driving seat at 132 for two in the 27th over.
But Moin, the astute PIA skipper, continued to exert more pressure even when a Fazle Akbar over cost 15 runs.
Naved Latif (30 off 31 balls), Shahzad Malik and Tabish Nawab were the only other PTCL batsmen to reach the 20-run mark.
Earlier, Shoaib Khan struck 82 off 85 balls with three fours and one six after Pakistan batsman Yasir Hameed stroked seven boundaries in a 53-ball 54 to enable PIA close their innings at 276 for nine after Moin won the toss.
Mahmood Hamid (35) and Janisar Khan (40) also made useful contributions.
