NAPIER (New Zealand), April 5: Hamish Marshall and Nathan Astle scored centuries and Brendon McCullum fell one short as New Zealand amassed a huge total of 561 on the second day of the first Test here on Tuesday.
As the runs flowed on a benign McLean Park pitch, Sri Lanka were 48 without loss from 12 overs when bad light forced an early end to the day, with Sanath Jayasuriya on 31 and Marvan Atapattu on 14.
New Zealand were dismissed for their sixth highest Test total, one hour into the final session.
Marshall top-scored with 160, Astle scored 114 while disappointed wicket-keeper McCullum became the seventh New Zealander to be dismissed for 99 in a Test innings.
James Franklin chipped in with his highest Test score, reaching 55 before he was last man dismissed.
With little in the wicket to worry the batsmen, it was left to the Lasith Malinga and his unorthodox slingy action to keep the batsmen honest and he was rewarded with four wickets including Marshall and McCullum.
Marshall set the tone for the day in the morning session as he progressed untroubled from his overnight 133 to pass his Test best 146, set against Australia last month.
He reached his 150 off 235 balls with a single to deep cover off Chaminda Vaas.
Almost unexpectedly, Malinga lured Marshall into mistiming a full delivery and the ball lobbed out to Chaminda Vass at mid-off, ending a 125-run partnership with Astle.
Marshall batted 326 minutes, faced 250 balls and hit 22 fours and two sixes, and lifted his average to an outstanding 67.25 from six Tests.
Astle brought up his 50 in streaky fashion, edging Vaas between the wicketkeeper and first slip for four just after Sri Lanka had moved the fielder wider.
Astle was lucky again on 91 when umpire Darrell Hair turned down a confident leg before wicket shout from Upul Chandana.
Soon after reaching his 10th Test century, he was gone cutting Vaas straight to Sanath Jayasuriya in the gully.
McCullum, who added 129 for the sixth wicket with Astle, survived a chance to Mahela Jayawardene when on six before opening up to reach 99 off 156 balls including two sixes.
Malinga ended the the innings with four for 131, while Rangana Herath took two for 91 and the veteran Vaas finished with two for 125.
