SARGODHA, April 5: Some 2,000 feet newly-constructed lining of the Mitha Luk distributary of the Lower Jhelum Canal passing through the city washed away soon after the release of water, causing a loss of millions of rupees to the exchequer. The project was initiated at a cost of Rs25 million during the closure of the canal last month. When the water was released, the seepage started and the concrete lining failed to resist its pressure and collapsed a few days ago. It is reported that the project was supervised by Executive Engineer Rashid Mansoor and his subordinates, including the SDO and sub-engineers.
Meanwhile, the Irrigation chief engineer has ordered a probe into the matter. He said a stern action would be taken against the contractor and the officials held responsible, besides recovering the loss from them.
