Solid Kallis leads South African resistance

GEORGETOWN, April 4: Jacques Kallis made South Africa’s highest score of the match as they battled to stave off defeat on the fifth day of the first Test against the West Indies on Monday. Kallis was 49 not out as South Africa, who need 355 to make the West Indies bat again, reached 169 for three in their second innings at lunch with Herschelle Gibbs on 17.

South Africa followed on after they were dismissed for 188 in the first innings, replying to the West Indies first innings total of 543 for five declared.

The visitors resumed their second innings on 85 for two, and survived a chance in the fifth over of the day when Jacques Rudolph, on his overnight score of 19, glanced a leg-side delivery from fast bowler Daren Powell.

Wicket-keeper Courtney Browne laid a glove on the dipping ball, but he failed to hold what would have been a fine catch.

Rudolph also survived chances on two and 14 on Sunday, but was finally trapped leg before for 24 by debutant off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine to end a third-wicket stand of 51 with Kallis, who was also dropped by Browne.

West Indies captain Chanderpaul bowled his leg-spinners, and employed Deonarine and left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds for most of the first 30 overs of the lengthened morning session.

West Indies took the second new ball 13 overs after it was due, hoping to capitalise on some inconsistent bounce.

On Sunday, paceman Pedro Collins took the key wicket of South African captain Graeme Smith before the close when bad light ended play three overs early.

Smith was bowled off his inside edge for 34 by a swinging delivery from Collins 16 overs before the enforced close, ending his careful innings after 142 balls.

A.B. de Villiers and Smith opened South Africa’s second innings three overs before lunch.

They batted cautiously until De Villiers dragged the sixth delivery after tea, bowled by King, on to his stumps to be bowled for 20.

South Africa might have been 62 for two, but Devon Smith at slip failed to hold a sharp chance after Rudolph, on two, edged a ball from Deonarine.

Smith’s dismissal followed, and Rudolph was dropped again on 14 when Ryan Hinds spilled a return catch.
