KARACHI, March 12: The teachers of the University of Karachi eulogized the services of Prof Dr Nasima Tirmizi for the university and her contributions to the field of marine biology at a condolence meeting held on campus on Saturday.

The noted woman scientist and former dean of the Science faculty, Dr Tirmizi, died on Friday. The condolence meeting was organized by the KU’s Department of Zoology with which the deceased teacher and researcher remained associated for long. It was presided over by KU Vice-Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim.

In their notes at the meeting, senior teachers maintained that Dr Tirmizi was a well-loved teacher and a woman of positive societal values. She was suave and had a vision blended with professional acumen and excellence in the domain of Zoology.

Dr Pirzada Qasim said that Dr Tirmizi lived resolutely and was a committed personality and teacher. Irrespective of the fact that she was a woman, she worked a lot for the promotion of science and research in the country. He said youths of today could emulate the lifestyle of Dr Tirmizi, who had a good aesthetic sense as well.

She played a very significant role in the establishment of the marine excellence centre and marine reference collection centre, despite odds and financial constraints, which would be remembered for long, he remarked.

The former chairperson of the Zoology Department and former dean of the science faculty, Dr Imtiaz Ahmad, said the deceased scientist worked dedicatedly for the promotion and recognition of Zoology as an important subject at all levels.

The ideals she set in the field of Zoology were remarkable, and her research papers, books and monographs would remain useful for long, he added.

Dr Suhail Barkati, Dr Afzal Kazmi, Dr Hafizur Rahman, Dr Iftikhar Imam Naqvi, Dr Quddusi Kazmi, Dr Muhammad Iqbal and Abdus Shaheed Nomani also spoke.—Staff Report
