Amendments should meet people

QUETTA, March 11: Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti has said that the proposed constitutional amendments should be made in accordance with the wishes of the people concerned, otherwise all efforts and recommendations would be meaningless.

Talking to newsmen in his native town Dera Bugti on Friday, the veteran leader said it was the demand of Balochistan that the proposed changes should resolve the core issues of the province.

He said that according to news appearing in a section of the press, Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain had submitted the report of the parliamentary sub-committee, headed by Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, to President Gen Musharraf. However, the other sub-committee formed for constitutional amendments had yet to prepare its report that was very important, he said.

In replying to a question, the Baloch nationalist leader said he had no information about the amendments proposed by the sub-committee to solve the issues of Balochistan.

He said that people would be in a better position to judge ?what is in their interest and what is against them? when these constitutional amendments would be made public. ?The people are conscious of the situation and can judge what is right and what is wrong,? Mr Bugti remarked.

It seemed difficult that the government would make changes in the constitution giving relief to the people, especially Balochs, he said.

Nawab Bugti, who is also president of the Jamhoori Watan Party, said the government could amend some unimportant articles of the constitution, but that would be meaningless.

Answering a question, he said that for the time being, there was no chance of any big political change in the country. ?Rulers were spreading rumours just to scare Mullahs, their own allies, and to please the Americans,? he said.

Referring to the Balochistan situation, the JWP chief said that for some days, the government had started military, political, social and economic action against the people of Balochistan.

First, they said all matters would be settled if ?we? forgot the crime of Captain Hammad he committed, and now the rulers urged ?us? to accept the recommendations of the two committees, otherwise action would be taken, he said.

He said the recent action in Marri camp was an act of intimidation by the government. ?All these dramas are being staged just to befool the people,? the JWP chief said.

The veteran leader said the government was paving the way for implementing its programme against the Baloch people.
