KARACHI, Jan 31: Over a dozen people have either been killed or injured since Jan 8, when a prominent social-cum-political figure was killed, in the ongoing gang-war in certain parts of Lyari Town
but police have made no significant headway so far in this regard.
Among the victims of the gang-war related incidents were three policemen who were gunned down by armed men. In one incident, at Chakiwara, two brothers were killed and in Gizri also, two brothers were killed in the other.
Besides the killings, bodies of two women were recovered. A survey of the affected areas shows that fear and terror have gripped the mind of ordinary people who become restive on hearing sound of gunfire.
In spite of the deployment of law-enforcement agencies personnel at the entry/exit points of the troubled localities, there has been no let up in the frequency of such incidents, according to community leaders who pointed out that Intermittent aerial firing at mid-night almost every day was causing sleepless nights for the residents.
They expressed concern over the situation saying that despite a series of killings and a great deal of panic in their localities, the government had not been taking any serious action against the narco-terrorist gangs involved in a long battle.
According to unofficial reports, more than 200 people have so far been killed or injured in the battle involving two gangs of crime mafia. The community leaders suggested that since the police had failed in bringing the situation under control, Rangers be given control of the troubled areas.
