PESHAWAR: Quacks add to misery of poor patients

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, Jan 31: Ha-kims, homoeopaths and quacks have been causing serious health problems to people, according to patients and a doctor.

"I have examined seven patients during the last few months who had developed acute renal and liver problems because of wrong medication by hakims, homoeopaths and quacks," said a doctor who worked at the Khyber Teaching Hospital.

Every patient visiting ha-|kims and homoeopaths were treated with some drugs that did more harm than good, he said. Recently, the provincial health department has notified the name of a so-called hakim and advised people against visiting his clinic.

The doctor attributed the increase in the number of people suffering from some infections to the dearth of qualified people and lack of health education among the people which compelled them to visit quacks.

Some of them claimed to be professors at universities that existed nowhere in the world, yet innocent people visited their clinics because they had no choice, said the doctor.
