QUETTA, Oct 3: Pakistan Army maintained their status as the dominating force in the track and field events of the 29th National Games at Ayub Stadium on Sunday.

The soldiers began the day by grabbing the gold in the high jump when Muhammad Riaz cleared the bar at two metres. The silver medal went to another solider Amad Farooq, while Tariq Ali of Wapda bagged bronze.

Army's second gold came in ten-event Decathlon after Muhammad Zaman bagged 6095 points to emerge the winner. Zaman's colleague Muhammad Amin grabbed silver medal with 5988 points, while Ejaz Ashraf of Police got bronze with 5251 points.

In triple jump, Army's Waseem Khan secured the gold with a leap of 15.53 metres. Naik Zafar Iqbal claimed the silver, Naveed Iqbal of Wapda took bronze. Naushad Khan clinched gold in the 5000m with timing of 15:25.2, while Army's Muhammad Shahid got the silver with a timing of 15:33.0 seconds. Bronze went to Ayub of PAF.

In discus throw, Ehtesham won the gold with a distance of 47.83 metres and was closely followed by Basharat Ali of Army at 47.37 metres. Army's Azhar Saleem grabbed the bronze with his throw of 46.44 metres.

In the women's 400 metres race, the only women's competition of the day, Gulnaz Ara of Wapda won the gold with a timing of 58.1 sec. She was followed by Fauzia Aurangzeb of Army who clocked 61.5 seconds and Shugufta Naureen of Wapda won the bronze in 63.2 seconds.

CYCLING GOLD

Dilsher Ali of Wapda grabbed the gold in 100-km Quetta Pishin Quetta cycle race amid protest on Sunday. Dilsher faced the trouble when he reportedly covered the last five kilometre of the race behind a vehicle which was against the rules.

Technical committee is due to meet to decide the fate of his gold tonight. According to the timings provided by the organizers, Dilsher covered the distance in two hours 33 minutes 38 seconds to lead the pack of 42 cyclists. Noor Alam of Railways bagged the silver while Sakhawat Ali took the bronze.

RESULTS: 1. Dilsher Ali (Wapda) 2hrs 33min 38 sec; 2. Noor Alam (Railways) 2hrs 38min 12 sec; 3. Sakhawat Ali (Army) 2hrs 38min 12 sec; 4. Naveed (Railways) 2hrs 38min 12 sec; 5. M.Asif (Railways) 2hrs 38min 12 sec; 6. Haroon Rasheed (Wapda) 2hrs 38min 12 sec.

SECOND GOLD FOR RAHILA

Wapda's Rahila Bano took her second gold in cycling event when she won the 10km road scratch event. Rahila, who won the 5km gold earlier, won in 18 minutes and 54.08 seconds. Army's Taskeen Ali and Ayesha took silver and bronze. -APP
