Initiative to upgrade NALC's status

By Correspondent

GILGIT, Oct 3: The government has sought proposals for upgrading the Northern Areas Legislative Council's status by amending the LFO for the Northern Areas, 1994, sources said.

They said the government had sought proposals from the Northern Areas administration about the inclusion of a clause for the provision of no-confidence motion in the LFO and appointment of a chief executive from amongst the members of the NALC.

They said the NALC had passed a number of resolutions in this regard and the government was considering delegating powers to the local representatives. They said the provision for no-confidence would bring more democracy and transparency.

Currently, the Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas minister holds the post of the region's chief executive.
