SUKKUR, Sept 16: Provincial leaders of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal have sharply criticized the statements of ruling party members regarding the military uniform of President Pervez Musharraf, and said it showed their political incompetence.

In a joint statement issued here on Thursday, MMA's provincial secretary-general Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, Maulana Abdul Qayum Halejvi and others claimed that President Musharraf was bound to shed his uniform morally and constitutionally as he had promised to the nation that he would doff his uniform by December 2004.

They said it would be a bad omen if the president did not honour his pledge and would be against the Constitution and ethics. They further said the MMA cooperated with the government over the issue of 17th Amendment to avert a constitutional crisis, but now the government was trying to create another crisis.

ESRA: The Education Sector Reforms Assistance Programme, in collaboration with the provincial education department, is implementing a school improvement plan in the Sukkur district with the support of the USAID, says a press release on Thursday.

District Coordination Officer, Sukkur, Abdul Qadir Mangi and all officers of the education department at the district, taluka, union council and school level have been directed to extend full support to the ESRA programme.

The ESRA is also providing financial assistance for implementing the school improvement plan by offering incentives to teachers who would be posted in the 35 closed schools of the Salehpat, Rohri and Pano Akil talukas in order to make them functional. The teachers posted in the closed schools of taluka Salehpat would be paid a remuneration of Rs3,000 per month.
