Greece arrests Pakistani immigrants

KOMOTINI, Aug 14: Greek police arrested 21 illegal immigrants, 18 of them Iraqis and three Pakistanis, as well as their presumed Greek smuggler, near the border with Turkey, police said on Saturday.

The would-be immigrants had crossed the river Evros, which forms a natural border and were picked up on the main road between Alexandroupolis and Komotini.

They were found packed into a caravan driven by a Greek, whom they had paid 620 dollars each to take them to Athens. Evros is a favourite crossing point with immigrants from Asia trying to make their way into western Europe.-AFP
