KARACHI, Aug 4: The people of Bangladesh fully support the cause of their Kashmiri brethren. This was stated by Abu Taher Salahuddin Ahmed, a Bangladesh scholar at the Australian National University.

He was expressing his views on the Kashmir issue at the Department of International Relations, University of Karachi. An announcement on Wednesday said his talks was held under the auspices of the Department's Programme of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution.

Abu Taher, explored the Kashmir conflict theoretically and from the causal (causal) point of view. He believed that the conflict in Kashmir particularly the emergence of liberation movement in 1989 is due to certain causes.

The scholar was of the view that this conflict is deeply rooted in historical, ethnic and religious factors. All these factors have been the determinants of 'Kashmir identity'. It means Kashmiris have an identity which has profound meanings for them.

Integrated causal model, he added, can explain the rise of Kashmiri movement in 1989. There are some crucial factors in this integrated causal model: identity, mobilisational resources, grievances, series of political actions.

Abu Taher was of the view that this explanatory device offers greater insight into the Kashmir conflict. To a question, the scholar responded that no analysis could be satisfactory unless it takes into account the Kashmiri people.

When asked about Bangladeshi people's view of the Kashmir conflict, he said the people of Bangladesh fully support the cause of the Kashmiri brethren.ng on the occasion, Prof Dr Moonis Ahmar of the Department of International Relations, University of Karachi, appreciated the efforts of Abu Taher and said that such kind of intellectual endeavour will facilitate greater and better understanding of the Kashmir issue.

Abu Taher's presentation on the occasion was followed by a question-answer session. - APP
