Unseeded Akbar dumps Khalid

Published July 11, 2004

KARACHI, July 10: Top seed Aqeel Khan, back from a triumphant tour of India after participating in the Satellite tournament, moved smoothly ahead in the men's singles of the Arif Habib KC Open tennis championship which began on Saturday on the hard courts of the Karachi Club.

Dominating the game throughout, Aqeel routed Omer Jamil 6-0, 6-0.

Joining Aqeel in the next round was second seed Nomi Qamar, who dropped a point while sailing past Abdul Majeed 6-1, 6-0.

But the same could not be said about Khalid Ali Nazar. The sixth seed made a shock exit in the first round after unseeded Akbar Patudi humbled him 6-4, 6-4 in a hard fought out match.

Mahmood Khan hardly raised up a sweat in overcoming Zeeshan Nasir 6-1, 6-2 and the same could be said about Usman Ejaz, winner over Kamran Arshad 6-2, 6-2. Adnan Zaki after losing an evenly balanced first set to Taimur Iftikhar, went down tamely in the second 6-1, to make his exit. Two very interesting matches were on the card in the boys singles Under-17. Amir Ali Khan finally overcame the fighting abilities of Fahad Ali 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 and Ahmed Jawaid after dropping the first set, got is act together to beat Salman Ali 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In another interesting encounter, Danish Ahmed excelling with his baseline play, got the better of Haris Iltifat 6-3, 6-4.
