Nida routs Mariyam to lift title

KARACHI, July 10: Top seeded Nida Waseem routed Pakistan ladies champion Mariyam Rahim in straight sets, to win the STA Women Classic Tennis Championship played on Saturday at Karachi Gymkhana hard courts.

Currently in Pakistan after a stay in the United States where she is studying on a tennis scholarship, Nida was in tremendous form as she reduced Mariyam to a mere passenger, racing away to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Displaying an array of ground strokes, powerful serves and volleys, the 22-year-old outplayed Mariyam in all departments of the game.

So dominant was Nida during this tournament that she dropped only one game on her way to the final and that too against Nida Rahim, Mariyam's younger sister in their semifinal encounter the day before.

Playing forceful shots from the word go, Nida kept Mariyam under constant pressure. Playing from the baseline the winner had her hapless opponent struggling throughout to get back into contention but sadly to no avail.

Final result:

Nida Waseem beat Mariyam Rahim 6-0, 6-0.
