RAWALPINDI: Notices issued on plea against franchise routes deal

RAWALPINDI, April 29: A single bench of the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi bench, on Thursday issued notices to the administration of a private transport company
, district Nazim, traffic police and secretary Regional Transport Authority on a petition filed by two members of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), seeking cancellation of a franchise transport agreement between the government and the company.
Justice Nawaz Ali Chohan also directed the above officials to respond to the writ petition filed jointly by PML-N MNA from Rawalpindi Cantonment, Malik Ibrar, and his party member Haji Ijaz by May 7.
The PML-N members have described the agreement as 'above Constitution'. The petitioners have contended that as per the agreement, the private company had to furnish 250 buses for tackling the load of commuters on the routes.
However, they added, the company had only 150 buses at its disposal due to which it had failed to bear the commuters' load on those routes. The petitioners have also sought the court to constitute an independent commission to conduct a survey on various routes to bring forth the shortage of buses and the sufferings of the commuters.
