'43,717 went abroad for employment in 3 months'


ISLAMABAD, April 25: As many as 43,717 persons proceeded abroad for employment during the first quarter of the current year. According to the data collected from the Protector of Emigrants , almost 44,000 persons were registered with the main and regional offices of Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment working under the Ministry of Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistan, during the period.

As many as 14,924, 12214 and 16,579 persons proceeded abroad for employment during the month of January, February and March, respectively, said a statement issued here on Saturday. Main labour market for absorption of Pakistani work force is Saudi Arabia followed by UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain.

Almost 1.8 per cent highly qualified, 8.45 per cent highly skilled, 42.52 per cent skilled and 47.23 per cent semi-skilled, un-skilled workers got employment abroad during the said period.

The statement said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding export of semi-skilled and un-skilled workers from Pakistan signed in October 2003, between the governments of Pakistan and Malaysia has been materailized w.e.f. March this year, however, no demand has been placed by the Malaysian employers yet.

All the persons desirous of employment in Malaysia are advised not to fall prey in the hands of recruiting agents and other illegal sources. Genuineness of any advertisement appearing in the newspapers for employment abroad including Malaysia may be confirmed from the respective office of the Protector of Emigrants.

The intending migrant workers are also advised to get a copy of Foreign Service Agreement duly registered with the office of Protector of Emigrants before their departure.

They may obtain receipt of the amount paid and documents given to the concerned Overseas Employment Promoters in respect of foreign employment, otherwise, complaints agitated at later stage will not be entertained.

Persons who manage to proceed abroad for employment on forged documents are deported from the host country and also have to face the prosecution within and outside the country. -APP
