Parliament should complete its term: Qazi

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 24: Acting President of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that parliament should complete its term and as such 2004 cannot be the year of elections. Qazi Hussain, who was on his way to Hyderabad from Lahore, was talking to a group of journalists at Quaid-i-Azam International Airport on Saturday.

Replying to questions, the MMA chief said President Gen Pervez Musharraf should take off his uniform according to the 17th Amendment in the Constitution and should restore total parliamentary system in the country.

Any attempt to introduce presidential form of the government, he added, would be violative of the Constitution.

Qazi Hussain, who is also chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, termed the Wana agreement between the tribal people and authorities a victory of all those people who wanted to avoid confrontation between the army and people.

The MMA's stand was that political matters should be resolved through political means as the use of force did not provide solution of the issue, he said.

It was a dangerous conspiracy to confront the army with people and the army also deserved gratitude for foiling the conspiracy, the MMA chief said.

He paid tributes to MMA MNAs from tribal areas, Maulana Abdul Malik and Maulana Mairajuddin, for playing important role in resolving the issue amicably.

The statement of Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri that Pakistan was considering the US request to send Pakistani troops to Iraq was unwise and illogical, he said, and added the entire nation saw the US intervention in Iraq with hatred and was against sending the troops in Iraq.
