KARACHI, April 6: Sindh High Court issued notices to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Limited (PTCL) in lawsuit of Internet Service Providers and Association, Karachi
, seeking unblocking of Internet telephony sites.
The court also ordered defendants not to take any adverse action against the plaintiff. It was contended by plaintiff's counsel Arshad Tayebally that there was a dispute between the PTCL and the ISPs on extending of internet telephony or Net2Phone Services. According to him, basic telephone service is exclusive domain of the PTCL, whereas the Net2Phone is entirely different field.
He submitted that the PTCL issued notice on Nov 17, 2003 whereby threatening to revoke the license of plaintiff. It was stated that the PTCL, without hearing the plaintiff, had prejudice and was predetermined to take adverse action. The court directing defendants not to take any adverse action against the plaintiffs fixed the matter for April 22.
PEARL CASE: A division bench of Sindh High Court comprising Justice Wahid Bukhsh Brohi and Justice Rehmat Hussain Jaffery, on Tuesday, adjourned hearing of appeals filed by Ahmed Omar Sheikh and others challenging their conviction by anti- terrorism court in US journalist Daniel Pearl kidnapping and murder case.
The hearing of case could not proceed due to non-appearance of Attorney-General. The matter was now fixed for the date to be fixed by office. The main accused, Ahmed Omar Sheikh, in US journalist Daniel Pearl kidnapping and murder case was sentenced to death and his three accomplices Fahad Naseem, Syed Salman Saqib and Sheikh Muhammad Adil were sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs500,000 each by ATC Hyderabad on July 15, 2002.
Abdul Waheed Katpar, Khawaja Naveed advocates appeared for the appellants while Advocate-General Sindh Anwar Mansoor Khan represented the State.-PPI
