KARACHI: KWSB told to get water lines repaired


KARACHI, April 3: Adviser to the Chief Minister on Local Government Waseem Akhtar on Saturday directed that emergency measures be taken to plug leakage in water pipelines. He warned of a stern action against those showing negligence or creating artificial shortage.

Mr Akhtar was speaking at a meeting of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board officials in his office.

A large number of the residents of Landhi, Korangi and Baldia had complained about water shortage when the adviser was on a visit to these areas last month. They had also apprised him of other problems during deliberations of a Kachehri.

The adviser told the KWSB officials that in order to solve the people's basic problems, it was imperative for government functionaries to work with honesty and spirit of service.

He noted that residents of Landhi Town were not getting adequate water while sewerage system there was also in a shambles. A serious shortage of water also prevailed in the adjoining colonies.

Chief Engineer, Water Distribution, Asoodo Mal said that the Board, at present, was carrying out nine development schemes in Korangi Town out of which four had been executed and the rest would be completed soon.

He said that one million rupees were being spent on water connection in Labour Colony, Korangi, and Rs8 million on sewerage improvement.

The meeting was attended by the Board's Acting MD Shahid Saleem and Xens of Malir, Korangi, Baldia, Gadap, Landhi and Korangi Towns.

NAZIM: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan has directed EDO (Water and Sanitation) Shahid Saleem to take immediately measures to overcome water shortage in Shershah areas.

He issued the directive during a visit to Paracha Chowk, in the area, on Saturday.

Mr Khan asked the chief engineer of water supply to connect the 16-inch-dia pipeline with the 10-inch-dia pipeline and also install check points to ensure water pressure throughout the lines up to the tail-ends.

The areas from which the city nazim had received complaints of water shortage included Paracha Chowk, blocks C and D of Jinnah Abad, Mohammadi Colony and Urdu Bazaar.

The nazim expressed his dissatisfaction over the performance of Xen Water Supply, Shershah, and asked the concerned officials to take emergency measures for adequate water supply to deficit areas. - APP
