LAHORE: Medical screening of students urged

By Our Reporter

LAHORE, March 3: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool has called for medical screening of all schoolchildren to diagnose genetic disorders for early treatment.

He was speaking at a ceremony of Sundas Foundation, an organization engaged in providing screened blood and blood products free of charge to patients suffering from blood diseases like thalassaemia, haemophilia, blood cancer and other chronic diseases.

The governor stressed that families with a history of genetic disorders should get the blood of their boys and girls screened before deciding marriages. He said there was need for creating a balance in every sphere of life and controlling eating habits. He said that people should adopt hygienic habits to avoid disease.

Lauding the efforts of philanthropists, he said that more of the well-off should come forward and help the needy. Social welfare organizations should be set up in each hospital and school to help needy patients and students.

Earlier, the governor visited the centre and saw the facilities being offered to thalassaemic patients. He also distributed gifts among the ill children.

The governor also distributed shields among officials who had helped provide donors to the centre. Sundas Foundation patron Munoo Bhai presented the welcome address. Sundas chairman Yaseen Khan and Punjab social welfare director-general Mazhar Ali Khan were also present on the occasion.
