India detains fishing boat

NEW DELHI, Nov 1: India’s coastguard has apprehended a Pakistani fishing boat with six people on board off the Gujarat coast, a report said Saturday.

The fishing boat, the “Al Noor”, was caught Friday fishing in India’s maritime zone without a valid licence or permit, the Press Trust of India news agency said quoting an official statement from the coastguard.

The authorities confiscated 300 kilogrammes of fish from the boat, which was escorted to a nearby port for further investigation, it said.

The coastguard had detained two Pakistani boats in the same area on Oct 27, the PTI report said.

The incident comes just days after New Delhi proposed meetings between the coastguards of the two countries and an amnesty to fishermen found in each other’s waters as part of peace initiatives between them.—AFP
