BOMBAY, Oct 6: Indian film star Salman Khan was charged by a court on Monday over the death of a homeless man in a car crash last year and faces two years in prison if convicted, the actor’s lawyer said.
The Bombay court filed 10 charges against the 37-year-old Bollywood heart-throb including causing death by negligent driving which carries two years’ imprisonment, lawyer Deepesh Mehta said.
“We will now see what happens at the trial which begins on October 21,” Mehta said.
Last month the Bombay High Court dropped the more serious charge against Khan of culpable homicide not amounting to murder which could have carried 10 years in prison. The other charges framed on Monday included drunken driving, driving without a license and causing grievous injury.
Khan was arrested in September 2002 after he allegedly drove his imported four-wheel-drive Toyota Land Cruiser over five sleeping
homeless people, killing one of them.
The film star was reportedly drunk and driving without a license and infuriated police by allegedly fleeing the scene after the crash in the Bombay suburb of Bandra.
Khan, known for his muscular physique and off-camera fits of temper, began his career in the late 1980s in his trademark role as an action and romantic hero.
He has starred in more than 40 movies, making him one of India’s top five film stars. Khan, who is on bail, also faces charges of shooting endangered black bucks and was alleged to have hit former girlfriend Somy Ali with a glass bottle in a Bombay restaurant.
There were also allegations that he physically abused popular actress and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai during their relationship which ended last year.—AFP
