Two Iraqis hurt as US van attacked

BAGHDAD, Oct 3: At least two Iraqi civilians, including one or more children, were wounded on Friday when a US military vehicle was attacked with a grenade that bounced off the vehicle before exploding, a US military officer and witnesses said.

No American casualties were reported in the incident. Captain Michael McBride said his driver was in the car when a vehicle drove up and threw what appeared to be a grenade before speeding off.

“It bounced off the Humvee and exploded,” Capt McBride said. He said that two children, including a boy who appeared to be 10 years old, were wounded.

Ali Abdul Aziz, 49, a labourer, said he saw four men in a blue Volkswagon pull up to the American vehicles. They got out and one of them threw a grenade before all four sped off.

“There was a big explosion,” Aziz said, adding that a man and a boy standing nearby were taken to hospital.—AFP
