LAHORE, Sept 7: Three-year-old bay English filly Dock Land Diva blitz her eleven rivals to win the Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed Cup run over 1400 metres during the Lahore Gymkhana races held as part of Defence Day celebrations at the Racecourse on Sunday.
Backed at 40 to 100 favourite the filly took a flying start and led all the way home to win by a distance from bay filly Fair Play.
Another bay filly Feel The Freedom finished third, eight lengths further behind while chestnut colt Royal Falcon completed the frame, two lengths further back.
Dock Land Diva trained by Mohammad Bashir was piloted by jockey Mubarik Ali. Earlier bay mare Burn Heart was withdrawn from the race leaving only a dozen starters.
The winner clocked one minute 25 seconds over the middle distance of 1400 metres. This was the eighth and last race of the day’s card, a handicap race for class I, II and III animals.
A race earlier bay colt Naseeb outclassed his dozen rivals by storming home to an easy success and lift the Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed Toyo Nasik Cup run over 1200 metres. He beat odds on favourite chestnut English filly Snow Drop by one-and-a-half lengths. Rukhtas Again and Prime Panther made up the frame, a distance behind.
The 30 to 100 favourite Snow Drop led the field before entering into the straight but later showed pretensions to stamina over the last 100 metres to be beaten by Naseeb by one- and-a-half lengths. Shahid Rehman rode the winner very efficiently while jockey Mubarik Ali partnered Snow Drop in a novice like manner.
Bay English filly Legality confidently backed by connections made a powerful thrust to put herself atop and win the Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed Eden City Cup contested over 1200 metres.
The progeny of Re Play out-of-Minshaar, Legality ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman and trained by Haji Fazal Hadi burst into the lead after entering the straight and beat front-running Easter Bird by about two lengths. Bay colt Amazing finished third a length back while Mahnoor completed the board , a distance further away.
There was a cup galore when eight cups named after national war heroes and recipients of the highest national gallantry award, Nishan-i-Haider were decided. Four of the eight cup events were won by ace jockey Shahid Rehman. His winning mounts were Two-B, Roxanne, Great Boy and Naseeb.
Trainer Muhammad Bashir excelled among trainers when he sent out two winners in Tora Bora and Dock Lands Diva, both owned by Khawaja M. Arif.
The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards were not satisfied with the running of odds on favourite bay filly Where Or When, who ran off the frame in the fifth race. They stood down her jockey A. Aziz and also stopped entries of the filly till the outcome of inquiry, they ordered to know the causes of her dismal performance.
They also suspended riding boy Ghulam Raza for 15 days for his unsatisfactory riding on Two-B on August 31 when the colt finished among also ran. He won convincingly on Sunday under jockey Shahid Rehman in the opener.
