Safeer and Yasir in semifinals

ISLAMABAD, Sept 7: PAF players Safeer Khan and Yasir Butt entered the under-19 semifinals of the 7th Hashim Khan National Junior Squash Championship on Sunday with straight games victories.

While Yasir’s victim was Farhan Mahboob, another PAF player, whom he defeated 9-6, 9-1, 10-8 in a well-contested quarterfinal, Safeer scored a crushing 9-2, 9-2, 9-0 win over Punjab’s Basit Ashfaq.

Army’s Khalid Atlas was the third player to go through to the last four stage walloping Faisal Zaman of PAF 9-1, 9-2, 9-3. Completing the semifinals line-up was Punjab’s Shah Nawaz who downed Naveed Nasir 9-2, 9-1, 9-7.

In Monday’s prefinals Safeer will now play Yasir while Khalid Atlas will be up against Shah Nawaz.

In the under-17s, Aqib Hanif set up a meeting in the semis with Majeed Hussain both beating their rivals from PAF.

Aqib, of Punjab, outplayed Faheem Gul 9-7, 9-5, 9-0 with Army’s Majeed going to four games in scoring a 9-5, 4-9, 9-5, 9-7 victory over Alamzeb Jnr.

In the other quarterfinals, Farzan Rashid was a 10-8, 9-1, 9- 5 victor against Muhammad Ali of Balochistan while Bilal Zaman recorded a 9-2, 9-6, 9-8 win over Muhammad Kashif.

Aamir Atlas and Adnan Khan made the semifinal grade in the under-15 competition as did Basit Samad and Naveed Alam.

Monday’s semifinals will pit Aamir, a 9-4, 9-0, 9-2 conqueror of Shoaib Hassan, against Adnan who brushed aside Shehzad Khan 9- 4, 9-1, 9-3.

Similarly Basit who was extended to four games by Fahim Zaman before overpowering him 2-9, 9-3, 10-8, 10-8, will take on Naveed Alam who too had to work hard in edging out Hamza Ahmed 9-5, 9-4, 0-9, 9-7.

Waqar Mehboob swept into the under-13 semifinals without dropping a point in his quarterfinal with Asif Khan, winning 9-0, 9-0, 9-0. Aqib Ahmed sent Owais Rahim packing 9-7, 9-2, 9-6 while Sheikh Saqib had to toil to overcome the challenge of Owais Khan 9-0, 9-0, 4-9, 9-5. Danish Atlas also entered the semis ousting Muhammad Ali Ayub 4-9, 9-3, 9-3, 9-7.

The girls under-19 semifinals on Monday will be an all-Punjab affair as Shafaq Naeem, Sara Awan, Muqaddas Ashraf and Misbah Rani all from Punjab booked their berths with straight games victories.

Mehwish Javed, Maria Gul, Zeba Pervaiz and Gul Zaman moved into the last four from the under-17 category while Zoya Khalid, Sara Sharief, Maria Yaqoob and Amina Mehboob went through from the under-15 age group.

The girls under-13s saw Roshna Mehboob, Riffat Khan, Samar Anjum and Aana Batool securing their semifinal spots.
