Badin again lashed by heavy rain

BADIN, Aug 24: Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm lashed Badin district once again on Sunday evening.

In Pangrio, the rain started at 6am and continued for at least 20 minutes inundating low-lying areas.

A number of trees were uprooted and the main electricity poles fell down in Pangrio resulting in breakdown of the power supply.

Many families were again shifted to the Pangrio camps.

Badin, Shaheed Fazil Rahu, Tando Bago and other coastal villages and towns also received light rain accompanied by strong winds.

The district administration, Badin, has informed the people of the district, particularly those living in the coastal areas, to remain alert as the met office has forecasted rainfall accompanied by winds on Aug 25, 26 and 27.

Meanwhile, the newly-nominated member of the District Relief Committee, Badin, Ashfaq Memon, has gone to Kadhan with boats and eight trucks in case of an emergency.

CATTLE: As many as 45,000 cattle heads were lost during the torrential rains in Badin district.

This was disclosed by the district officer, animal husbandry, Dr Bijar Khan Leghari, while briefing a meeting of the District Relief Committee on Saturday.

The meeting was chaired by Syed Ali Bux Shah.

The director, Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority, Mumtaz Memon, informed the meeting that out of 123 minors and distributaries of the Guni and Fuleli canal divisions, 27 had developed breaches and an amount of Rs42.7 million was required for its maintenance.

He said out of 105 drains in the district, 31 developed breaches and for their plugging and maintenance about Rs35 million would be required.

TRANSFER CRITICIZED: The District Council on Saturday in a resolution condemned the transfer of the EDO, health, Badin, Dr Ahmed Ali Talpur.

Later, District Nazim Kamal Khan, talking to members, blamed the District Relief Committee for bypassing the district government.
