TOBA TEK SINGH, Aug 19: Crops on hundreds of acres of land were damaged when a 100-foot-wide breach occurred in the Khewra sub-canal on Tuesday.
The breach developed near Chaks 386 and 387 early on Tuesday. It was 40 feet wide which widened to 100 feet. The irrigation department staff and farmers could not fill it up after a struggle of 19 hours.
Meanwhile, the irrigation executive engineer ordered an inquiry to find the cause of breach.
VEHICLES SNATCHED: Two vehicles were snatched by robbers on Tuesday.
A government department overseer, Muhammad Arshad, was on his way to Pind Dadan from Kassowal by his car (Karachi-B 7233). When he reached near Chak 336-GB Saraba, five car riders intercepted him. They took him towards Bhaghat government forests where they tied him with a rope and drove away with his car.
A commuter wagon was driven away by four robbers.
The wagon owner told Saddar police that the vehicle was going to Jhang from Toba Tek Singh. The robbers intercepted the vehicle near Chak 389-JB and ordered passengers to get out of it. However, they took the driver and conductor along with them and dropped them at a deserted place on Toba-Majhi Sultan road.
FISCAL AID: The district council adopted a unanimous resolution on Monday urging the Punjab government to award Quaid-i-Azam medal and financial grant to the family of the late Ibrar Husain of Chak 97-JB who was killed near Pucca Anna railway station in an encounter with robbers.
District Nazim Muhammad Ashfaq said on the occasion that equal financial grant would be allocated to every union council for their development schemes. He urged the union council Nazims to give priority to the soling and drainage schemes of rural areas.
