124 literacy centres to be set up in Pindi

By Our Reporter

RAWALPINDI, Aug 19: The district government, in collaboration with the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), will establish another 124 literacy centres in the city by the end of November, District Nazim Raja Tariq Kiani said here on Tuesday.

During his visit to four literacy centres in Dhok Matkyal, Mr Kiani said the aim of establishing more centres was to educate those between the ages of 15 to 39 years.

He said the number of such centres would increase to 274 after the opening of the new ones as 50 centres were already serving the community.

The district government, through another project, has already provided the opportunity of enrolment to those children who had not been admitted to schools for some odd reasons.

The district Nazim said the literacy centres would not only solve the problems of uneducated children but also help the adult citizens.

Each enrolled person will spend about three months in these centres, where they will be taught how to read and write according to the NCHD curriculum. After completing the course, they will be able to read newspapers and write letters.

“If they (students of literacy centres) want to continue their study, the district government will provide them education in English language on its own expenses,” Mr Kiani said.
