2 bodies recovered in Giyal
GILGIT, Aug 5: The death toll after an accidental explosives blast in the Giyal village has risen to 46 after two more bodies were recovered in the debris, police said on Tuesday.
The bodies of two of three people reported missing since the weekend explosion were found by army-led rescue teams on Monday night, police spokesman Mubarak Jan said.
Both were buried on Tuesday, as the government appointed a judicial commission to probe the incident, an official said.
A tribunal comprising district judge Mohammad Alam Khan has been instructed to submit his findings within a week, said Northern Areas Deputy Home Secretary Mohammad Hussain.
The blast razed dozens of homes in the Giyal village, after dynamite sticks, detonators and other blasting material stored in the house of a building contractor, Waris Khan, blew up on Saturday night.
The ensuing blast destroyed some 50 houses and damaged another 100 in a radius of around 1.5km, officials said.
The tragedy left scores of people homeless in the village, home to some 3,000 people.—AFP
