Danish, Yasir sail into last 8

ISLAMABAD, July 25: Yasir Khan and Danish Ahmed, both from Sindh, on Friday advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Junior Invitational tennis tournament that began at the PTF Complex.

Danish outplayed NWFP’s Shakirullah Khan 6-3, 6-0 while Yasir defeated Islamabad’s Jawad Gardezi 6-3, 6-1.

Rawalpindi’s Nomanul Haq was also an easy victor and went through by beating Shaheen Khan of NWFP 6-2, 6-2. In another match, Sindh’s Amir Ali Khan was given a walkover against Ali Abdullah.

The tournament in which top 12 under-16 players are taking part, was inaugurated by Brig Khalid Sajjad Khokhar, senior vice president of the Pakistan Tennis Federation.

The 12 players remained in a training camp under the supervision of coaches Inamul Haq, Mehboob Khan and Shah Mehmood since the start of the month.

Results:

Singles pre-quarterfinals: Danish Ahmed (Sindh) bt Shakirullah Khan (NWFP) 6-3, 6-0, Nomanul Haq (Rawalpindi) bt Shaheen Khan (NWFP) 6-2, 6-2, Yasir Khan (Sindh) bt Jawad Gardezi (Islamabad) 6-3, 6-1, Amir Ali Khan (Sindh) walkover against Ali Abdullah (Sindh).

Doubles quarterfinals: Shaheen Khan-Nomanul Haq walkover against Ali Abdullah-Danish Ahmed; Usman Ijaz-Amir Ali Khan bt Jawad Gardezi-Zakirullah Khan 6-3, 6-4.
