ISLAMABAD, July 15: Naimat Ullah Khan, the Nazim of Karachi, on Tuesday asked Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to allow the city government to collect one to two percent as service fee on all imports routed through Karachi.

In his meeting with the prime minister here on Tuesday the Karachi Nazim said that the amount collected as service charge on imports would be used for improving Karachi’s civic infrastructure.

Mr Khan also informed the prime minister that earlier the proposal was turned down by the army-led federal cabinet. He requested the prime minister to review the decision.

The Nazim apprised Mr Jamai about various developmental projects and problems of the metropolis.

He also presented a proposal called “Vision 2025” to the prime minister.

He briefed the premier about the proposal for the improvement of water supply and sewerage system of the city.

To implement the proposal, he asked the federal government to extend financial help to the tune of Rs5 billion.

Mr Jamali made no commitments. He, however, promised to look into the proposals and decide after consulting the cabinet.

The Karachi mayor also briefed the PM about the Shah Faisal Colony fly-over which has been completed ahead of schedule. He requested the PM to inaugurate the project on a suitable date.

Mr Jamali on this occasion said that the democratic government of the PML-Q and its allied parties had always tried to provide essential basic amenities to the masses and this was the reason that it was working on the improvement of civic structure in the country.

The prime minister described the completion of the fly-over as an achievement of his government. He thanked the Nazim for the invitation to inaugurate the fly- over.
