PALO ALTO, California, June 20: World record holder Tim Montgomery easily advanced from the first round of the 100 metres at the U.S. championships on Thursday, but world indoor champion Justin Gatlin was eliminated.
Montgomery cruised through the first 50 metres before easing up to clock a time of 10.04 seconds as he qualified for Friday’s semi-finals.
Gatlin, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, was not as fortunate. Drifting badly in his lane, he finished fourth in his preliminary race in 10.32 seconds and failed to go through.
