ISLAMABAD, June 18: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) will launch a solid waste management project with the financial assistance of Japan in the fiscal year 2003-2004, a source told Dawn on Wednesday.

Under the project, a new mechanism of solid waste-dumping will be introduced with the establishment of a new dumping site in Kurri area.

The source said that the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) had announced a grant of Yen70 million for the establishment of a sophisticated dumping site in the city.

He said representatives of JICA had confirmed that the grant would be released within a couple of months. He said the project near Chak Shehzad would cost Rs1.5 billion.

The Japanese government had agreed to finance the project by providing required monetary assistance to the authority but the assistance was stopped due to sanctions imposed against the country after nuclear detonations.

With the lifting of the sanctions, Japan has again announced that it would shortly release the grant.
