KARACHI, May 19: A sizable number of protesters representing the youth wing of the Pakistan People’s Party (Shaheed Bhutto) on Sunday staged a rally in front of the Karachi Press Club against the continued detention of a party activist, Ali Mohammad Sonara.

Carrying party flags and banners, they converged on the club and raised slogans against the authorities demanding release of their leader.

A PPP-SB spokesman, Javaid Soomro, said that there was no justification for the re-arrest of Mr Sonara after he was granted bail by a higher court in all the cases registered against him.

He said that the ‘arbitrary action’ had exposed the government’s practice of intimidating its political opponents. However, he warned, such actions were bound to cast a negative impact on the country’s political scenario.

Demanding an immediate release of Mr Sonara, he maintained that any case pending against him should be referred to a court of law.
