SUKKUR, April 24: There is no possibility of forming a caretaker government in the Centre despite the ‘hooliganism’ of the opposition and repeated postponements of the National Assembly session, Senate Chairman Mohammedmian Soomro said on Thursday.
Talking with journalists at the airport here before leaving for Dera Allahyar, Mr Soomro also praised Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, saying he had shown magnanimity by inviting the opposition for talks, adding that every opposition party had been asked to participate in the talks, due to be held on Friday.
Urging the opposition to participate in the talks, he said for the sake of democracy, it should seek a way out to end the persistent crisis on the Legal Framework Order.
Referring to the rumours of tabling a no-confidence motion, Mr Soomro said that the move was destined to fail as he had been elected by a majority vote, adding that if the opposition wanted to table a motion against him, they could do so as it was their democratic right.
Our Jacobabad Correspondent adds: Chairman of the Senate Mohammedmian Soomro dismissed the news regarding President Pervez Musharraf’s dubbing the National Assembly as being uncivilised, saying he was not aware if the president had actually said it.
Referring to the issue of the president’s uniform being suited for promoting democracy, he said that he found it difficult to answer it as it was a very sensitive question.
Expressing hope for a breakthrough regarding deadlock over the issue of LFO, he said that the opposition should play a positive role and avoid opposition for the sake of opposition.
Talking with journalists at the circuit house here, he said that the issue of the construction of the Thal canal had not been moved in the Senate, adding that he would consider it if it did.
Referring to the law and order situation in Jacobabad, he hinted that the government would soon initiate a grand operation against outlaws in Kandhkot and Kashmor.
APP ADDS: Chairman Senate Mohammedmian Soomro has expressed the hoped that the forthcoming talks between Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and the opposition will bear positive results, adding that it would ultimately help both the houses of the assembly to function in a smooth and disciplined manner.
Talking to journalists here at the Sukkur airport, Mr Soomro prayed for the success of the talks between the prime minister and the opposition, to be held on Friday and Saturday, he said that they were of vital importance.
Dispelling the impression regarding his partisan attitude, Mr Soomro said that the impression had been created by the opposition, adding that he would try his best to perform his role in a fair and neutral manner.
The chairman of the Senate said that he had never tried to be aggressive because he wanted to run the house by taking all the members in confidence.
