ISLAMABAD, April 10: Pakistan said on Thursday the Iraqi people should have control over their country, as international attention was focused on an interim set-up in Iraq after almost complete takeover of Baghdad by US-UK forces.
“We want early end to hostilities. We want Iraqi people to have control of their country and we want UN to play a role,” foreign office spokesman Aziz Ahmed Khan told AFP.
Mr Khan did not say what role exactly Pakistan, a non-permanent member of the Security Council, would like for the United Nations in Iraq.
When asked if Pakistan’s government was considering closing Iraq’s mission in view of the fall of Baghdad, the foreign office spokesman said the embassy in Islamabad was still functioning.
INDIAN SABRE RATTLING: In reply to a question about Indian leaders’ statement against Pakistan, Mr Khan condemned relentles sabre rattling and war mongering by leaders of Indian ruling party BJP and urged it to adopt civilised ways of conflict resolution.
Criticizing the relentless sabre rattling by the extremist Hindu Party and the constant war mongering of Indian leadership the spokesman said, it was further darkening the extremely hostile environment created by such irresponsible statements.”
BJP’s resolution, he said, was aimed at inciting the government of India .—APP
