NAB reopens steel purchase reference

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, April 10: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has reopened the steel purchase case in Capital Development Authority (CDA) to know how the persons involved in the case were acquitted, sources told Dawn.

The sources said some CDA officials had purchased 5,295 metric tons of steel allegedly without any requirement, causing a loss of Rs132 million to the Authority.

However, the CDA was of the view that the steel was purchased for various uplift projects but it could not be utilised, as a few projects were executed due to financial constraints.

Later, the CDA had suspended some officials involved in the case. But, they were acquitted on the orders of an official of defunct chief executive secretariat, the sources said. The Public Accounts Committee had also found discrepancies in purchase of extra quantity of steel by the CDA.
