A press release issued by the ICMAP on Thursday said that Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Economic Affairs Shaukat Aziz would inaugurate the conference on May 2, while the concluding session would be chaired by the PM’s Adviser on Privatization & Investment Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

Key note address would be delivered by the deputy president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Technical papers and commentaries would be given by prominent speakers from SAFA countries.

The ICMAP statement observed that SAFA was formed in 1984 and it was now recognized as an apex body of Saarc. The accountancy bodies of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal were the members of SAFA.

“The broad objectives of the federation as a forum of professional accountancy bodies is a commitment to the positioning, maintaining and developing the profession in its member countries and ensuring its continued eminence in the world of accountancy,” the press statement stated, adding that the permanent secretariat of SAFA was based at New Delhi, India.

The statement observed that the upcoming conference in Karachi would provide an opportunity to deliberate on the international business trends and the measures required by developing countries on the corporate governance. It would also deliberate on the questions whether the world would become a free trade zone with no tariff barriers and whether developing countries would survive under the new WTO regime.

The conference would also deliberate on the future of accountancy profession. The ICMAP stated that SAFA holds conferences and seminars in member countries from time to time in order to achieve the development of a coordinated accountancy profession in the region.
