Lewis may retire soon

LONDON, March 2: Britain’s world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis said on Sunday he could soon hang up his gloves.

“That is definitely an option for me. At this point I can sit right now as the emperor of boxing,” he told BBC radio.

However, the 37-year-old refused to rule out a June fight with former undisputed champion Mike Tyson.

“It depends on him,” he said. “He says he doesn’t want to face me and I’m not forcing no man to fight me. But he just has to let me know in writing what he wants to do.”

Last June Lewis handed Tyson a savage beating, defeating the American in eight rounds.

In February Tyson scored an emphatic victory over Clifford Etienne, knocking his compatriotn out in the opening seconds of the first round of their scheduled 10-round bout in Memphis.

But Tyson had said he needs more fights and time to get his career and life together.

Certainly Tyson is the only fighter interesting Lewis right now.

In January Lewis called off a prospective bout with German-based Ukrainian Vitali Klitschko. Lewis had been due to fight Klitschko in April. —Reuters
