Muslim inmates win right to offer prayers
By Our Correspondent
WASHINGTON, Jan 24: Muslim prisoners in Florida will now be allowed to assemble for congregational prayers following intervention by a Washington-based Muslim civil rights and advocacy group.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said Orange County Correctional Facility had agreed to the prayer services and appointed a liaison with the prisoners in response to a letter the council sent to the US Justice Department.
An inmate at a facility in Orlando, Florida, told CAIR that Muslims were not allowed to assemble for Friday prayers on a regular basis and that correctional officers did not respond to requests for copies of the Holy Quran.
